Meet Bob Garretson
A Leader that Listens
Bob Garretson has dedicated his life to service—first in the United States Navy, then in public administration, and now as a financial planner, business owner, and community leader in Muskegon. With a deep commitment to economic growth and revitalization, Bob brings the experience, leadership, and vision needed to move Muskegon forward.
A University of Washington graduate with a Bachelor of Arts in International Studies, Bob was commissioned as an Ensign in the U.S. Navy, serving six years on active duty. He deployed on the USS Blue Ridge (LCC-19) in Yokosuka, Japan, and was later stationed at the Bureau of Naval Personnel in Washington, D.C. During his service, Bob earned the Navy Achievement Medal and two Navy Commendation Medals for his leadership and dedication.
Following his military career, Bob pursued a Master of Public Administration at The George Washington University, gaining expertise in government operations, budgeting, and public policy. He applied these skills working in budget, HR, and IT for Johnson County, Kansas, before transitioning into financial planning.
For the past 25 years, Bob has worked as a financial planner, helping families and businesses plan for the future. As the owner of Embark Financial Partners, with offices in Muskegon and Overland Park, KS, he has been a dedicated advocate for economic growth. In 2008, he chose to relocate his office to Downtown Muskegon, investing in the city’s revitalization by establishing his business in the Hines Building. While building a business and investing downtown, Bob and Heather raised two kids, Ben and Cate, and worked with multiple organizations in Muskegon and regionally to help strengthen housing, business opportunities in Muskegon, and lakeshore communities.
The Garretsons
Bob and his wife, Heather, have been deeply rooted in the Muskegon community for over 17 years. A proud graduate of Muskegon Christian, Western Michigan Christian, Calvin University, and Creighton Law School, Heather has built a distinguished career in law and public service. She served as a Federal Prosecutor, law professor, and is a published author as well as advocate for ending mass incarceration. Heather has worked with the ACLU of Michigan to support re-entry programs for returning citizens and currently sits on the board of the Calvin Prison Initiative, which provides higher education to incarcerated men at Handlon Prison. Heather is currently the Deputy General Counsel for Sportradar, Inc.
Together, Bob and Heather have two children. Their son, Ben, graduated magna cum laude in Biochemistry from the University of Virginia and now works at the Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory. Their daughter, Cate, is currently a honors student and sophomore at Georgia Tech, where she is studying Biomedical Engineering.
Bob and Heather chose to reside in Muskegon’s historic Jefferson Street neighborhood in the house Heather grew up in. They own a business suite downtown at 380 W. Western.
As mayor, Bob will bring his leadership, financial expertise, and commitment to community development to build a stronger, more prosperous Muskegon for generations to come.
